The 10 Rules of the Sustainable Traveler
#1 Go digital: When making reservations (for flights, trains, hotels, etc.), don’t print out page after page of confirmations. You can keep everything just a click away on your phone, helping to preserve forests and reduce paper waste. Choose online guides over paper ones: you can find information on what to do and see, as well as mapped itineraries for outdoor activities, food and wine, and culture.
#2 Public transportation is more sustainable: use it. The best way to get around is by public transportation or by bike. Check it out here: ATVO (bus) and ACTV (buses and ferries). If you own an electric car, you can charge it at the charging stations located throughout the city.
#3 Avoid having towels and sheets changed too often: this will help the hotel avoid wasting large amounts of water and energy and using excessive amounts of detergent.
#4 Turn off the lights and air conditioners every time you leave the room: even at your accommodation, you can follow the same good habits you practice at home, such as turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
#5 Choose local dishes: getting to know and discovering a place also involves its food, especially if it’s locally sourced or organic.
#6 Support local producers: By choosing artisanal products, you’re helping the local economy and supporting local producers.
#7 Be mindful of waste: make sure you’re well-informed about the recycling rules in the place you’re visiting. Avoid using plastic bottles and bring a reusable water bottle: you can refill it often, and many types keep your water cool even in the summer.
#8 Avoid collecting shells and sand: not only is this prohibited by the Navigation Code (Art. 1162) and could result in a fine, but it also has a negative impact on the marine habitat. Of course, you can play with the sand and shells, but you shouldn’t take them home.
#9 Choose eco-friendly beaches: these are recognized each year by the international NGO FEE, which awards the Blue Flag to locations that not only have clean seas but also meet various criteria for accessibility and eco-sustainability. Jesolo has received this certification every year since 2003.
#10 Pack a sustainable suitcase: in addition to a water bottle, be sure to bring reusable shopping bags for grocery shopping and compostable cutlery. And… Avoid products with plastic packaging.
